Whether you’re considering purchasing a Bestway® above ground pool, are a new pool owner, or are a seasoned pro who just wants some tips on how to get your pool ready for a new season, make sure you start with a “clean slate” before setting up your pool.

Leveling the playing field (the ground) correctly will ensure you can continue to enjoy your above ground swimming pool for many years to come.

What You’ll Need

  • Pool manual or instructions
  • 2x4s, stakes, and string
  • Mason level or carpenter level
  • Shovel (or any other tool to remove dirt and debris)
  • Rake
  • Tamper or flat garden hoe
  • Garden hose
  • Mason or mortar sand (optional)
  • Ground cloth

5 Steps to Level the Ground for Your Above Ground Pool

1. Check the Manual or Instructions

The very first thing you want to do is read the full manual or instructions included with your pool. Follow the recommendations to learn the best method for above ground pool installation and what actions could void your warranty.

After reading the manual, determine if you're going to need additional help leveling the ground. If you have a large above ground swimming pool and don't have the necessary equipment, consider asking friends or family for help or hiring a pool installation company.

Check the Manual or Instructions

2. Choose the Right Location & Remove Rocks

Choose a flat, smooth surface that is at least 10 feet away from your house or any other large structure. The area must be clear of aggressive plants, weeds, overhead powerlines, and trees.

Grass, concrete, or any surface capable of supporting the total weight of the pool water and users is recommended.

Avoid placing your above ground pool on balconies, decks, mud, gravel, loose soil, driveways, or surfaces that could shift or collapse under the weight.

Once the location is selected, remove all rocks, debris, and plants that could damage the pool.

3. Identify High Points & Add or Remove Soil

Identify any high points using 2x4s or stakes and string. Never attempt to eyeball the level of the ground, as even small height differences can affect pool stability.

When using 2x4s, place them from the center of the pool area to the outer edge and use a level to identify uneven areas. Mark high spots before digging.

Identify High Points and Add or Remove Soil

If using stakes and string, place one stake in the center and one at the edge, tie the string between them, and place a level on the string to check ground level.

Use a shovel to add or remove soil gradually, one scoop at a time, until the entire area is level.

4. Rake & Tamp the Ground

Once the ground is level, rake the area to remove any rocks or debris that surfaced during leveling. Water the soil until it is moist.

Use a tamper to compact the soil and create a firm surface.

Optional Step: Top Area with Sand

Always refer to your pool’s manual before adding sand, as improper use can cause damage.

Sand is used as a buffer between the ground and pool liner, not for leveling. Use fine mason or mortar sand only.

Dig at least two inches into the ground and add no more than one to two inches of sand. Tamp again to ensure compactness and prevent liner wrinkles.

Remove any debris that surfaces during this process.

5. Put Down a Ground Cloth

The final step is to place a ground cloth before setting up your above ground pool. While optional, it is highly recommended.

Ground cloths protect the pool liner from sticks, rocks, and other debris, while also protecting your lawn. They help prevent muddy areas if water spills over the pool edge.

Put Down a Ground Cloth

With your ground properly leveled, you’re all set for many splash-filled sunny days in your Bestway® above ground pool.
