How Do I Use a Sand Filter Pump?

A comprehensive guide on how to set up, maintain and use a sand filter pump for your above ground pool.

Crystal-clear pool water is just a sand filter pump away! This powerful cleaning tool is an upgraded version of the cartridge filter pump you’re likely familiar with, providing you with sparkling clean water by capturing small particles of debris.
For best results, make sure you properly set up the pump by following the instructions in the included manual and by incorporating pump cleaning into your pool maintenance routine.

Benefits of a Sand Filter Pump

By using silica sand (or washable, reusable Polysphere™ Filtration Balls) instead of filter cartridges, sand filter pumps can last longer and require less ongoing maintenance than cartridge filter pumps. Sand can last up to three years in the pump if properly cared for, while the cartridges need to be cleaned or replaced every two weeks.

Sand filter pumps are the ideal solution for pools that have larger water capacities, especially if they are going to remain assembled in your backyard all year long.

Choosing the Right Sand

Bestway® sand filter pumps require #20 silica sand (sold at your local hardware store). Depending on the size of your pump, it will require between 20 and 80 pounds of sand. This sand should last up to three years with proper care and maintenance.

A lightweight replacement option for sand is Polysphere Filtration Balls – requiring between 0.5 and 2.2 pounds, depending on the size of your pump. These cotton-ball-like spheres are just as effective as sand and can be washed and reused repeatedly. With proper care, Polyspheres will last 4-6 months.

Sand Filter Pump Setup

Before starting the setup process, make sure to select the best location for your pump. It should be placed on flat ground where it can stand straight up and won’t easily be knocked over. If your pool doesn’t have a spot like that nearby, you can place it on a level platform made of either wood or concrete.

1. Take the filter pump and all the parts out of the box and review the manual to familiarize yourself with the product.

2. Assemble the filter pump, then fill it with the appropriate amount of sand or Polysphere Filtration Balls.

3. Attach the hoses to the filter pump, then to the pool, matching the A and B ports on the filter pump to the A and B ports on the pool.

4. Remove the stoppers from the inside of the pool and replace them with the corresponding A and B drain strainers.

5. Secure each hose in place with the included clamps.

6. Press down on the handle on the top of the pump to let the excess air out, about 20 seconds or until you see water start to come out of the D port.

7. Plug in the pump and power it on. Make sure the pool is filled with enough water to cover the inlet and outlet valves before running the filter pump!

Using Your Sand Filter Pump

Your sand filter pump can perform six different functions. Simply press down on the top handle and turn it to the mode you would like to use – make sure the pump is powered off before changing the setting!

Before you use your pump for the first time, be sure to run the Backwash function for 3-5 minutes, followed by the Rinse function for 1 minute. This will remove some water from your pool, so be prepared to refill it. Turn off the pump immediately if the water level dips below the pool inlet or outlet valves!

• Backwash: This function cleans the sand. (Do not use this function with Polysphere Filtration Balls.)

• Rinse: This function levels the sand after running the Backwash function.

• Filter: This function filters the pool water (and will be the function you use 99% of the time).

• Circulate: This function circulates pool water by passing it through the sand filter pump but not through the sand.

• Drain: This function drains water from the pool.

• Closed: This function stops water from flowing between the sand filter pump and the pool.

Note: When the pump is set to Backwash, Rinse or Drain, you should open the D Port to allow water to freely drain from the pump.

Sand Filter Pump Maintenance

To make sure your pump is performing as it should be, you’ll need to clean the sand once every month or so. It is important not to overclean the sand or it may not last as long as intended. Make sure to check the pressure gauge attached to your pump – once it’s over 6.5 PSI, it’s time to clean!

1.  Turn the top handle to Closed and turn off the pump. Remove the cap from the D Port.

2.  Turn the top handle to Backwash and turn the pump back on. Water should start draining from the D Port.

3.  Once the water runs clear (about 2-3 minutes), switch the setting to Rinse, allowing water to drain from the pump until it runs clear (about 1 minute).

4.  Turn the pump off. Turn the top handle to Filter and turn the pump back on as normal.

Turn off the pump immediately and add more water if the water level dips below the pool inlet or outlet valves!

Now that you know the ins and outs of your sand filter pump, you can enjoy clean and clear water all season long! Be sure to round out your pool care routine with proper chemical maintenance and deep cleans with a vacuum, skimmer or brush
