A filter pump is an essential accessory for your above ground pool, keeping the water sparkling and clean. It works its magic by circulating water out of the pool, through a filtration system to remove the debris and back into the pool again. Although it does not replace chlorine maintenance, it will filter out dust and debris, so that your water stays clear and swim-ready!
There are a few types of filter pumps available, each with different benefits depending on your lifestyle. Some are better for pools that you intend to keep just for the summer, while others are better for people that don’t want to spend a ton of time on pool upkeep. Here’s a quick breakdown of the types of filter pumps that Bestway offers:
Cartridge Filter Pumps
The most common above ground pool pump is the cartridge filter pump. It uses a filter cartridge, made of hard plastic and filtration paper, to get rid of debris. The fine folds in the paper trap the dirt to ensure the water is clean. It is attached to the outside of the liner through hoses, allowing the water to efficiently flow through the pump and back into the pool. Filter cartridges need to be cleaned every two weeks and replaced when they are completely soiled.
A cartridge filter pump is a great, cost-effective choice for pools that will be assembled at the start of the summer and disassembled at the end, due to the disposable nature of the cartridges.
Skimatic™ Filter Pumps
A Skimatic filter pump combines the two powers of a surface skimmer and a filter pump, without any extra hoses! This pump is installed on the inside of your pool, and it uses the same filter cartridges as the cartridge filter pump to trap dirt. It also features a large-capacity tank that can trap larger debris, like leaves, to keep the water fresh without you having to skim it yourself. The tank should be cleaned out daily, and the filter cartridge should be cleaned every two weeks.
A Skimatic filter pump is perfect for families that would like their filter pump to trap large and small debris. It is also a great solution for smaller backyards without much room for an external pump or hoses. This type of filter pump is not compatible with steel wall pools (like our Hydrium™ line).
Sand Filter Pumps
Sand filter pumps are the lowest-maintenance and most environmentally friendly option offered for filtration. They use silica sand to trap dirt and debris, which can last for up to three years if properly maintained. We also offer Polysphere™ Filtration Balls as a lightweight replacement for sand. These small, cotton-ball-like spheres are just as effective and can be washed and reused repeatedly.
Sand filter pumps are the ideal solution for pools that have larger water capacities and are going to remain assembled in your backyard all year long.
