5 Tips for Re-Packing Your Stand-Up Paddleboard

One of the main benefits of inflatable SUPs (stand-up paddleboards) is how portable they are, which makes them ideal for long treks to remote paddling locations. Plus, paddleboards with zippered backpacks are extremely easy to fit in smaller vehicles and cars without requiring you to buy a roof rack (like most hard-sided options).

Before you take your first water-venture, it’s important to make sure you’ve mastered the basics of inflatable stand-up paddleboard setup/takedown. Deflating stand-up paddleboards is not as intimidating as you might think. So, if you’re looking for how to fold SUPs, you’re in the right place!

Here is how to properly deflate and fold your SUP to keep it compact and easy to travel with in 5 easy steps:

1. Find a flat surface, and remove all fins, leashes and other attachments, including any personal items you might have been storing using the elastic cords at the front/back of your SUP.

2. Use a towel to wipe off water, dirt or debris, then deflate the paddleboard using the inflation/deflation valve. (Be careful to keep your face away from the valve as it can make a loud sound when you first press the button.)

3. Fold the mostly deflated board from nose to tail (roll it like you would a sleeping bag). Roll starting from the end opposite the inflation/deflation valve to allow excess air to escape as you fold up your board.

Pro Tip: To help remove as much air as possible, use your knees and body weight between each roll/fold. You may want to use your towel again to wipe down the board as you fold it to make sure it’s completely clean and dry before you pack it up. This will help with the lifespan of your paddleboard and prevent odors that may occur with excess moisture.

4. If your paddleboard comes with a storage strap, fasten the strap around your folded board to keep it from unrolling and pull the strap as tight as possible.

5. Place your rolled up board back in your carry bag or backpack along with the removed attachments and be on your way.
