Above Ground Pools

How to Prepare an Above Ground Pool for Rain

A person pulls a black cover over a round Steel Pro MAX above ground pool.

It only takes a few simple steps to get your AGP ready for rainy weather!

A little rain in the forecast is no match for a Bestway® above ground pool, especially if you take a few extra steps to prep your family’s favorite backyard staple. These steps help to keep your pool in great shape and to make clean-up a breeze after those rain clouds blow through and the sun comes back out.

1. Give the Area a Good Clean

With rain may come wind, so to reduce debris flying and damaging the pool, give the area around and inside the pool a good clean. Pick up any loose items, such as pool floats, toys or cleaning accessories (and store them with the StorePro™ Organizer), lawn furniture, and sticks or rocks. If it is going to be windy, you may want to sweep the patio or deck to remove dust or loose debris to prevent it from getting into the pool water. Double check your filter or skimmer basket to ensure they are clean and ready to get to work once the skies clear.

2. Reduce the Water Level

If there’s heavy rain in the forecast, it is worth draining a small amount of water from the pool to prevent it from overflowing. Reducing the water level by an inch or two can help to protect the area around your pool from damage. Be sure not to let out too much water – you want the pool to still hold its overall shape and structural integrity (and stay put if there’s wind).

3. Turn Off the Filter Pump

Water and electricity don’t mix, so be sure to cut the power to your filter pump (and any other electric backyard accessories) before the clouds roll in. If the forecast is calling for heavy rain, consider covering the electrical equipment with a tarp or moving it indoors. Once the rain is gone, you can plug it back in and operate it as usual.

4. Consider a Pool Cover

A pool cover is a great accessory that will prevent debris from getting into your pool water during the rainstorm, making clean-up much easier! However, if there is a prediction of heavy winds, leave the cover off so it doesn’t blow away.

5. Check the Chemicals

After the drizzle is done, check your chemical levels to make sure everything is as it should be. Rain can dilute chlorine and lower pH levels, so bring them back up by testing the water and adding in any chemicals that may be needed. Maintaining the appropriate chemical levels is easy with an all-in-one chemical kit. If the water is looking a little green or cloudy after the rain rolls through, shock the pool to fully sanitize it and reset those chemical levels. A skimmer or vacuum is a great accessory to remove dust or debris from the storm.

A little preparation goes a long way when it comes to an above ground pool in the rain. Taking these preventative steps now helps to save time and headaches later. Once those skies clear, you and your family will be back to swimming in no time!
