How to Pick the Right Air Mattress for You

4 Types of Air Mattresses for 4 Types of Sleepers

There are a variety of features to consider when you’re looking for the perfect air mattress, such as the sleep surface, the material, the height of the bed… But one of the most important, yet overlooked, features you should pay attention to is the internal beam structure.

The beam structure is important because it holds the top and bottom pieces of the air mattress together, keeping it from blowing up like a balloon as you inflate it. Beam structures can be constructed in different patterns to create different comfort levels - from ultra-soft to extra-firm.

Just like a traditional mattress, your ideal beam structure depends on how firm you like your mattress while you sleep. At Bestway, we use 4 different internal structures, each with individual purposes and comfort levels.

1. Vertical I-Beam

The most common type of internal beam construction for air mattresses is the Vertical I-Beam. This pattern is created by multiple strips of material being welded to the top and bottom of the mattress in a vertical pattern, running from head to toe.

Benefits: Vertical I-Beam is great for sleepers who move around a lot throughout the night. The bed will respond quickly to movement because the vertical beams will hug your body while you sleep. When you move the mattress, it will move with you.

Comfort Level: Soft

2. Coil Beam

Coil Beam construction is very similar to a traditional mattress. Loops of material are welded to the top and bottom of the mattress to create a pattern that looks similar to coil springs.

Benefits: This is another construction type that is great for active sleepers, because it will respond quickly to body movement in the same way as the Vertical I-Beam beds, cradling you within one of the crevices. In addition, the coils will hug your body, providing contoured support.

Comfort Level: Soft

3. Horizontal I-Beam

Similar to Vertical I-Beam, this construction type uses strips of material that are welded to the top and bottom of the bed, but in a horizontal pattern, running side to side.

Benefits: Horizontal I-Beam creates a balanced bed that won’t move as much with your body. Rather, the bed will match the form of your body, with your shoulders and hips settling down into the crevices. This will provide pressure relief, great for side sleepers.

Comfort Level: Medium Firmness

4. Wave Beam

Wave Beam is the most premium beam structure. This construction technique uses wave-shaped beams in horizontal rows to create a completely flat surface.

Benefits: A wave beam bed will feel completely flat and won’t move throughout the night. This beam structure helps you maintain spinal alignment and will provide contoured pressure relief for your shoulders and hips.

Comfort Level: Firm

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to sacrifice comfort when you spend the night on an air mattress. From soft and cushy to firm and supportive surfaces, Bestway has an air mattress for everyone!
